In August, Lorna Reddicks and Austin Bowyer attended INFORM Dallas, a community partnership event that seeks to provide positive alternatives to the variety of unhealthy choices trauma can cause. Hosted by Beyond Visionary and Heal America, the event featured a panel of individuals from The City of Dallas, Dallas Independent School District (DISD), Urban Specialists, Vogel Alcove, Men of Nehemiah, and The Dallas County Criminal Justice Department.
Panelists discussed the importance of being a trauma-informed city. A trauma-informed city recognizes the presence and symptoms of trauma. Trauma-informed cities are built through connection, compassion, and communication. We must unite to face issues directly and collaborate to foster mutually beneficial solutions that support Dallas youth. It was encouraging to see how the panelists brought diverse backgrounds and solutions together to combat the complex issue of trauma. The result was a fruitful discussion that displayed how we are more vital as a city when organizations work together.
Understanding trauma and how to best support individuals dealing with it is critical when serving at-risk youth. It creates a surrounding that is a safe space and healing ground for those who have experienced trauma. While we can’t change the past, we can focus on providing the best current environment for A-SOL students.
At A-SOL, we are committed to partnering with organizations that provide better opportunities for Dallas youth
